The Fort Amherst Harbour Authority has a Part-Time Supervisor at the harbour.  The Harbour Authority itself can accommodate vessels up to 65 ft. The harbour does not accept yachts and pleasure crafts at it's harbour.

The depth of the water around the wharf is 18 ft.  The harbour does have a fresh water supply and accessible hookups, bathroom facilities, and one shower.  Garbage containers are available to accept regular garbage and recycling containers too are available.  No household garbage, rope or netting allowed.  There is a waste oil disposal on site but no Wi-Fi.  The harbour does have shore power available with no special connections required.  There is an unloading facility operated by Seafresh Seafoods Ltd.

“ Fort Amherst Harbour Authority - Major Expansion Nears Completion “

The expansion of the Fort Amherst Small Boat Basin in St. John's, NL, includes building a new docking facility, improving the breakwater, and upgrading electrical systems to increase capacity and safety for the fishing fleet. This multi-phase project aims to double the number of fish harvesters it can accommodate and is expected to be completed in the next two years. The expansion is a response to the current congestion and safety issues in the basin, which has become overcrowded with commercial, recreational, and transport vehicles.

Project details

  • Objectives:

    • Double the capacity for fish harvesters.

    • Create a safer docking area for commercial fishing vessels.

    • Improve the overall infrastructure of the harbour.

  • Included work:

    • Construction of a new docking facility.

    • Improvements to the breakwater.

    • Upgrades to the electrical systems.

  • Status:

    • The project is in its second phase.

    • The expansion is expected to be completed within the next two years.

  • Funding:

    • The project has received federal government funding for its development.

    • Additional funding amounts will be announced as the tendering process is completed.

Rationale for expansion

  • The basin is currently congested, with a mix of commercial and recreational boats, as well as large trucks and forklifts, leading to safety concerns.

  • Increased fishing activity and vessel traffic over the years have made the current infrastructure inadequate for the needs of the commercial fleet.

  • The expansion is considered a necessary upgrade to ensure the long-term viability of the fishing industry in the region.
